By BBN staff: The Roman Catholic Church, at the request of Pope Francis, officially opened a two-year process called the “Synod on Synodality,” an expansion of its usual “Synod of Bishops,” and as part of this process, the bishops around the world will consult with everyone from parishioners to Catholic monks, nuns and universities before meeting for a broader discussion in 2023.
In Belize, the Synod began today with Ministers of Education and Human Development in attendance.
From this process, the church hopes to learn how it can draw more fully on this kind of process of consultation and discussion – in other words, how it can become more “synod” in its governance.
Synod comes from the word “syn-hodos”, which means “to walk together”. The church describes it as a time to listen to the Holy Spirit and the people of God to see what the Holy Spirit is asking of the church. Pope Francis gave the theme “The Synodal Church: communion, participation, mission”.
All the bishops of the world will meet in Rome in 2023 to discuss their findings over the next two years, but Pope Francis insisted that the first phase of the synod begin at the diocese level so that everyone has a chance to contribute. leadership and be heard, even those of us who may have left the church before.
“This morning, at the invitation of Bishop Lawrence Nicasio, I had the pleasure of participating in the official opening of the CATHOLIC SYNOD 2021-2023 in Belize”, wrote the Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca on his page Facebook.
The last time a synod was held in Belize was in 1989.
Over the centuries, the Roman Catholic Church has organized many such gatherings, but rarely one so large in its potential consequences.
Tomorrow the church is also organizing a “white mass for our healthcare workers” on the feast of St. Luke in remembrance of those who have passed away in the past year and for the invaluable service of the workers. health across the country. The mass will be broadcast live from the Cathedral of the Holy Redeemer on the Guadalupe Media Facebook page. Belizeans are encouraged to be part of tomorrow’s Mass and the current Synod.
