Director of Communications for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany resigns

ALBANY – Mary DeTuris Poust, who has handled communications for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany for the past six years, will step down effective Jan. 28, according to the diocese.

“I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve the Diocese of Albany for almost seven years, and I am proud of all that we have accomplished with the help of an excellent communications team,” said DeTurris Poust in a statement Friday. “Now it’s time for me to return to what has always been the core of my ministry and my professional life: writing, retreat work, and public speaking.

She was hired in 2015 to create a social media presence for the Diocese and the Bishop. The diocese spans 14 counties and she suggested social media would be a way for the church to expand its reach. She suggested to the General Assembly of American Bishops in 2012 that social media would be a beneficial way for the church to reach both Catholics and non-Catholics.

“Mary brought to the post a unique blend of journalistic skills, spiritual insights and social media knowledge, not to mention a long-standing Catholic faith that guided everything she did,” said the Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger. “Although we are sorry to lose her, we are grateful for her tireless efforts on behalf of the Diocese and the Church as a whole, and we wish her all the best as she continues to spread the gospel through the community. written and spoken word. “

In her statement, DeTuris Poust said she was grateful to the bishop for “his commitment to transparency and truth, for his support of Catholic communications as the primary means of evangelizing, educating and to inspire, and, most importantly, for his tireless efforts to bring healing to survivors of sexual abuse.

She is former editor-in-chief of Catholic New York, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of New York, and editor-in-chief of the weekly Our Sunday Visitor, and has also served the dioceses of Metuchen, NJ, and Austin, Texas.

A search for his replacement will begin soon.
