Fire burns Imo Catholic Church and destroys equipment

A fire on Monday destroyed music equipment, clothes and some items in the sanctuary section of Assumpta Cathedral in the Metropolitan Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, Imo State.

Our correspondent, who visited the Archdiocesan headquarters at the Control Junction in Owerri around 8am, saw parishioners, priests and residents gathering to catch a glimpse of the destruction wrought by hell.

Although the fire was extinguished, PUNCH Metro observed as smoke billowed from the section affected by the fire.

Items lost in the fire were estimated at millions of naira.

A parishioner, who did not want to be identified, said: “The incident happened at midnight. Thank goodness it didn’t spread to other parts of the cathedral. I don’t know what we would have done. Glory to God that the damage is minimal.

The archdiocese’s director of communications, the Rev. Raymond Nzeremeogu, said: “It has not spread to other parts of the cathedral. The firefighters were contacted and they came. Clothing, musical equipment like amps, speakers, microphones and others have been affected.
