Nnewi Catholic Diocese resumes construction of Ifeanyi Ubah Cathedral
The Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Bishop Jonas Benson Okoye has called on the Catholic faithful across the diocese to unite for the completion of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Nnewi.
The cathedral which is single-handedly built by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah after demolishing the old cathedral collectively built by the diocese, has been under construction for twelve (12) years.
Anaedoonline.ng has reliably gathered that Ifeanyi Ubah, who currently represents Anambra South Senatorial District, was invited to a meeting by the Bishop, where he was informed that the Diocese has decided to resume construction of the cathedral to ensure its speedy completion.
Our correspondent has learned that the new Bishop of Nnewi Diocese who is determined to see that the cathedral is completed in one (1) year, plans to set up a construction committee which will continue where Senator Ifeanyi Ubah left off. stopped.
It will be recalled that in 2013, Ifeanyi Ubah demolished the Catholic cathedral of the diocese of Nnewi with the promise to rebuild it within a year.
In 2015, in a nationally sponsored interview with members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, he assured the Catholic community of Nnewi that the church project would be completed by November 2015, but again failed. In 2019, a promise seems to have been made but unfortunately was not kept.
On August 26, 2020, as well as in March 2021, in the presence of Catholic Bishops, he assured the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi that the cathedral would be commissioned during its Golden Jubilee celebration on September 3, 2021, but this also failed.
The non-completion of the cathedral continued to be a major setback for the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, as a diocese that has not had a central venue to host diocesan events for the past 12 years.
