Priest assaulted and robbed at gunpoint outside Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore – WCCO
BALTIMORE (WJZ-TV) – A priest was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint outside a church in the Little Italy neighborhood of Baltimore on Friday afternoon. Father Bernie Carman of St. Leo Roman Catholic Church has bruises and scrapes, but he’s fine, thankfully.
His parishioners are worried about him, especially since he has other health problems. The priest is expecting a new kidney and has just had surgery to prepare it for dialysis.

“I was like, at that point, ‘Oh my God, he might shoot me,’” Carman said. “He could fire this thing.”
Baltimore Police said the attack occurred just before 4 p.m. Friday afternoon. Father Carman said he was getting out of his car in front of the church when a man he did not know approached him. “(He) ran to me and said, ‘Give me your wallet,'” Father Carman said. “I said no.’ He pulled out a gun, he sort of kept it close to him.
Father Carman said the man hit him on the side of the head with his gun, then a woman came and stole his phone and the man took his wallet. He said that while this happened, he fell to the ground and banged his head against a wall outside the church. “I think all the effects of that just kicked in because on Sunday night all of a sudden I felt extremely tired,” Father Carman said.

His parishioners cannot believe this has happened.
“It upsets me a lot because Father Bernie is a good man who does a lot of good in the world,” said parishioner Marie Rippey. “We pray for him and now we have that for that too. “
Father Carman said he had no ill will towards his attackers. He just wants them to make better choices. “How about a change of life?” Said Father Carmen. “How about a different career? Because I think it would be much better in the end. “
