Roman Catholic priest jailed for child sex offenses in Horsham

Police say Father Anthony White, 64, now of Cross-In-Hand, Heathfield, was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on Friday June 10.

Police say White was convicted at Chichester Crown Court on April 1 of two offenses of indecent assault and another of aggravated sexual offense against a boy in the 1990s when he was a priest assistant at St John’s Church.

A police spokesperson said White was sentenced to 10 years and six months for the aggravated sexual offense and five years for each indecent assault offence, to run concurrently.

“He will serve two-thirds of his sentence in prison,” police said.

“The prosecution, authorized by the CPS, followed an investigation by detectives from the West Sussex Safeguard Investigations Unit after a report was first received by police in 2020.

“The victim was supported by specially trained officers and the officers enjoyed the full cooperation of Church authorities throughout the investigation.”

Detective Constable Yvonne Daddow said: ‘I would like to thank the witnesses for taking the time to come out and support the police in this investigation.

“We will always investigate such cases and provide support to victims, seeking justice where possible, no matter how long ago the events may have occurred.”
