St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica School will have a new principal

Sr. Bernadette Huong-Nguyen will replace Felicia Andrews-Runnels as Principal.

BEAUMONT, Texas — St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica School in Beaumont will have a new principal for the 2022-23 school year.

Sister Bernadette Huong-Nguyen will replace Felicia Andrews-Runnels, according to a statement from the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont. Runnels served as principal for six years and spent 28 years educating students.

Beaumont Diocese officials thanked Runnels for his years of leadership and wished him luck.

Sister Nguyen is originally from Houston and earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of St. Thomas. She is a member of the Province of the Dominican Sisters of Mary Immaculate located in her hometown.

The next principal taught at different grade levels, according to the statement.

Sister Nguyen most recently served as a teaching specialist and curriculum and instructional support coach at a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

Sister Bernadette enjoys volunteering as a confirmation catechist and has a passion for learning new things and supporting teachers, the statement said. She attended the 2021 World Series game to cheer on the Houston Astros and bring “the joy of Christ to the many Astros fans who attend the games.”

Sister Bernadette said it was “a great privilege and an honor to be chosen to serve the school in the Basilica of St. Anthony’s Cathedral”. She said she was looking forward to meeting her new family.

Bishop David L. Toups announced today that Sr. Bernadette Huong Nguyen will join the staff of St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica School in Beaumont as Principal beginning in the 2022-23 school year.

Sister Bernadette Nguyễn is originally from Houston and a member of the province of the Dominican Sisters of Mary Immaculate located in Houston, Texas. Sister Bernadette holds a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Thomas and has taught at various grade levels. Sister Bernadette recently served at a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston as a teaching specialist and curriculum and instructional support coach. Additionally, Sister Bernadette enjoys volunteering as a confirmation catechist and she has a passion for learning new things and supporting teachers. She had the privilege of being a “Rally Nun” and attended the 2021 World Series games to cheer on the Houston Astros, but more importantly, to bring the joy of Christ to the many Astros fans attending the games. Sister Bernadette said it was a great privilege and honor to have been chosen to serve St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica School and she looks forward to meeting her new school family.

The current Headmistress, Mrs. Felicia Andrews-Runnels, has served six years as Headmistress and a total of 28 years educating the students of the school. We are extremely grateful for his leadership and wish him good luck.

St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica School, located in Beaumont, serves the entire Southeast Texas community. A kindergarten through eighth grade school, it was the first Catholic school founded in Southeast Texas when it began in 1895. It was nationally recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and the students are strong competitors within the Private Schools Interscholastic Association. .
